Project Structure - Work Package 3

New Protection, Control and Management Techniques in Evolving Networks

Work package manager: Prof Peter Crossley, The University of Manchester

Key deliverables are:

  • Network capacity analysis tool that calculates the optimal size and location of new generating plant to maximise total generation capacity in a network
  • Location dependent price tool, used to encourage the connection of generators at desirable locations from the network viewpoint
  • Systems that extract knowledge from condition monitoring data and use it to enhance protection and control
  • Critically assessment of the limitations of conventional and proposed loss of grid detection and amelioration techniques
  • Prototype equipment that allows synchronous islands to operate independent of the grid
  • Tools for adaptive post-fault capacity assessment of networks with distributed generation

Activities are:

Activity 3.1 Strategies to maximise the absorption of new generation

Activity 3.2 Design and evaluation of loss of grid detection and amelioration techniques

Activity 3.3 Protection and control of distribution networks with synchronous islands

Activity 3.4 Use of condition monitoring data to enhance protection and control and improve reliability of supply
